Republican lawmakers are showing rare signs of resistance to President Trump's wishes, challenging the conflict against Iran, budget proposals and key appointments in the government as concerns grow about Republican hopes of victory in the November midterm elections.
The House of Representatives' approval of a resolution to stop US military action against Iran was the most serious violation. Democrats and four Republicans alike backed the proposal.Trump responded on social media, calling the Republicans who supported the motion "GRANDSTANDERS" and calling the action "unpatriotic." The vote was one of the few times when Republican members openly disagreed with Trump on a significant policy matter.
Republicans disagreed with the US president on more than just the Iran vote. A planned US $1.8 billion fund for Trump supporters who believe they were unfairly targeted by the government has also drawn criticism from lawmakers. The plan has been called a "slush fund" by critics of the proposal.
Earlier this week, the Trump administration said that the bill would be abandoned following a judicial decision to reject it. However, Trump still pushed his interest in moving forward with the plan.
A proposal for US$1 billion in security funding related to a proposed White House ballroom was another controversial topic. Before senators had a chance to vote on the motion, it was withdrawn. Some Republican legislators have also criticised personnel decisions. Some members of Congress have threatened to resist attempts to reauthorise a monitoring program after Trump appointed housing executive Bill Pulte as head of national intelligence.
On Thursday, Trump declared that Pulte's position was just temporary.
