Geopolitics on the High Seas: U.S. Seizure of Venezuelan Tanker Raises Global Tensions

Washington D.C., has revived an age-old tactic by seizing foreign-flagged vessels in international waters and near foreign coastlines. This week, the U.S. military boarded and detained the vessel known as Skipper, an oil tanker operating off Venezuela’s coast. The U.S. claims the tanker is sanctioned and tied to illicit activities, prompting Caracas to denounce the action as an act of international piracy. Footage released shows troops descending ropes from helicopters in a gritty, Hollywood-style scene more reminiscent of a blockbuster film than a Hague-approved operation. President Donald Trump, never one to shy from grandiosity, declared it “the largest one ever seized,” a superlative that’s questionable in factual terms but effective in optics. The tanker is accused of transporting illicit oil linked to Iran, Venezuela, Hezbollah, and the IRGC’s Quds Force—forming a geopolitical bingo card of Washington’s favoured adversaries.
Maduro, Venezuela’s president, responded with a curious mix of pop psychology and pop music. During a rally, he assured supporters by singing "Don’t Worry, Be Happy," seemingly unaware that a U.S. boarding party was simultaneously, at that very moment, clambering onto one of the tankers supporting his troubled oil industry.
Russia predictably entered the dispute, with Kremlin officials affirming steadfast support for their Caribbean partner. Oil markets immediately reacted with upward fluctuations, reflecting concerns over supply disruptions. Meanwhile, shipping analysts warn that Washington’s renewed enthusiasm for maritime interdiction could destabilise an already fragile tanker network, risking broader regional economic impacts.
One clear statement and point emerges: the Caribbean is no longer solely a playground for tourists and cruise ships. With the USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier deployed nearby and U.S. forces conducting lethal anti-smuggling strikes, the waters off Venezuela are transforming into a stage for a larger, high-stakes geopolitical drama.
Maduro’s seemingly casual performance of "Don’t Worry, Be Happy" contrasts sharply with the serious military actions underway. As U.S. forces increase their presence and escalate anti-smuggling operations in the region, the waters off Venezuela are increasingly becoming a focal point of strategic contention and power projection, signalling a significant shift in regional security dynamics.
